| Tampere Region The Tampere Region is the centre of vibrant economic life and versatile education. The local economy is based on automation, electronics and information technologies, wood processing, machine construction, rubber as well as food and textile industries. The industrialisation of Finland was started over 200 years ago in Tampere. Today many businesses in the area are global actors and market leaders in their fields. Technology Centres Hermia and Finn-Medi support start-up businesses and produce service and cooperation concepts for them to utilise knowledge and technology. In the regional centre the University of Tampere has six faculties for education and research as well as a continuation training centre and an open university. In the Tampere University of Technology there are 10 education units and 33 research institutes. In the Tampere Region there are two polytechnics with 20 fields of education. There are also several adult education centres and over 30 vocational institutes. In the region there is a large variety of different cultural sectors from performing theatres, music, art, literature up to the popular culture. The region is one of the most favoured targets for city and countryside tourism in Finland. The Finns have selected the region the most desired place to live.
