Satakunta Region

Satakunta is one of the historical regions of Finland. The river Kokemäenjoki running through the region has been an important passage and advanced the spread of settlements and sources of livelihood to a wider area. In comparative terms Satakunta is the most industrialised region in the country. Particularly the base metal, machine construction, wood processing, leather and food production industries are significant. The Pori and Rauma ports are vital to businesses countrywide. Technology Centre PrizzTech Oy promotes innovation and supports start-up businesses, and runs the Centre of Expertise Programme in materials technology in the region.

University Centre of Pori offers education in information technology and business. The teacher-training unit in Satakunta educates teachers for schools around the country. Satakunta Polytechnic has five education fields. The adult education centre and other institutes offer a vocational and continuous training.

Satakunta is well known by its annual jazz events that draw thousands of spectators to Pori year after year. The Old Town of Rauma and the Sammallahdenmäki Bronze Age burial site in Lappi are cherished as UNESCO’s world cultural and natural heritage sites. Hundreds of years old churches made of granite testify the strength of ancient settlements. Current and ancient days meet in the region.

Satakunta had 235 400 inhabitants at the end of the year 2002.
