Central Finland Region

The Central Finland has the historical legacy for a high level of skills and education. In the University of Jyväskylä there are seven faculties, including the only Faculty of Sports and Health Science in Finland and a Continuation Education centre. The polytechnic is multidisciplinary. The Adult Education Centre also offers continuous training.

The pulp, paper and timber industries utilise the vast forest resources in the area. Other specialised areas are manufacturing of paper machines, electronics and information technology, graphic and chemical industry as well as energy and environmental technology. The Technology Centre is in charge of the Centre of Expertise Programme.

Central Finland has strong sub-regions and municipal centres in its countryside. Youthfulness, know-how and cultural variety are distinctive of the area and increase the attractiveness of the region. The seasons offer varying potential for nature tourism in the area.

At the end of 2002 there were 265 100 inhabitants in Central Finland.
