Basic Information about the European Union

Main objectives Institutions Information resources

The European Union is based on the principles of democracy and the rule of law. The main objectives of the Union are:

- to secure freedom, security and justice
- to assert the identity of the European Union on the international scene

The Institutions

The European Council occupies a unique place in European Union decision-making. The European Council brings together the Heads of State or Government of the Member States of the European Union and the President of the European Commission. The decisions taken at the European Council meetings are a major impetus in defining the general political guidelines of the European Union.
